Model Search & First Friday at PAC

Middletown's dog portrait studio, Dogpatch Pix, is conducting a model search for up to 6 dogs that were adopted through Circle Tail.The dogs selected will receive a complementary portrait session at the Dogpatch Pix studio and a free 5x7 print of one pose... a value of $125!

Portraits of the selected models will be revealed in the studio during the February 3, 2012 First Friday event at the Pendleton Art Center where the Dogpatch Pix studio is located.

To apply for the model call, complete the application form at http://www.dogpatchpix.com/model-call/. Dogs will be selected to provide a nice diversity of types for the portrait display on February 3. Deadline for model call application is January 23. Dates of portrait sessions will be January 27 and 28. Please enter only one dog per family.

Adoptable Cuties!

It's Tuesday, and that can only mean one thing. It's time for Petfinder.com's Tweet A Pet Tuesday! We have lots of new cuties who are ready for adoption, and we're thrilled to be able to show them off for all to see.

To get the party started, here are two of the cutest of the cute, pups Kiersten and Viv.

These little dolls were born in May, and they are already learning house training and basic obedience. Their mom was a border collie, and dad was a lab

On the subject of border collies, meet Riley. This handsome and inquisitive guy is about 4 years old, and he is waiting for his forever home.

It's hard to resist the friendly face of Camille, don't you think?

This sweet little girl was born at Circle Tail back in December, and she would make a great addition to any home. She is already trained, and loves to do just about anything!

Up next, Nigel, a charming black lab who is about 2 years old.

Nigel is already house trained, neutered, and up to date on his shots, so he's good to go. All he needs is a home!

Last, but definitely not least, Miss Geena.

Geena is described as a "people pleaser," and those who know her think she would make a wonderful therapy dog. She is about 5-7 years old, and just needs a loving home to live out her golden years.

Retired Assistance Dogs

As Assistance Dog Week comes to an end, we are shining one final spotlight, this time on some of Circle Tail's most special dogs, the retired assistance dogs. These guys and girls have worked hard to change the lives of their partners, and they deserve nothing but the best in retirement.

Here are a few of the Circle Tail dogs who entered retirement after a lifetime of service, and a job well done.

First up, Chester, shown here hitting the button to open an elevator door.

And taking a nap.

Up next, hearing dog Sydney, wearing her service vest while hiking in Utah.

And hanging out on the couch with her bunny.

And, last but not least, Jesse, who was Circle Tail's second retiree.

Jesse was trained as a seizure response dog and, among his other skills, he was trained to pull an alert card out of his partner Greg's pocket when Greg was having a seizure. Jesse would then give the card to anyone he could find in order to get help for Greg.

Spotlight on Assistance Dogs in Training

As part of International Assistance Dog Week, we are turning our attention to our Circle Tail students. These dogs are in training to be assistance dogs, and they can tell you that this is no easy task!

The dogs go through four general levels of training before they are partnered with an assistance dog recipient. Just like human students, the dogs progress through elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. Here are some of our current students!

International Assistance Dog Week

It's International Assistance Dog Week, and we are celebrating by shining the spotlight on a few of the fabulous Circle Tail assistance dogs.

First up, Coda, a beautiful golden retriever who has been partnered with Marlene since 2006.

Coda works hard to help Marlene around the house and, as you can see from this photo, has a special talent for laundry!

Up next, Pierre.

This handsome yellow lab was partnered with Barb in 2009, and he does double duty as both a service dog and a hearing dog. Barb states that Pierre is a great ambassador for assistance dogs, as his goofy smile has made him a popular guy wherever he goes. Way to go, Pierre!

Finally, in our last spotlight for today, Yen.

Yen the border collie was donated to Circle Tail from the Humane Society of Clark County, and he is certainly a great example of a rags to riches tale. This former shelter dog now helps his partner Angela with anxiety issues and panic attacks, and Angela calls him an "amazing gift." It's pretty clear from his big smile that he loves both his work, and his life with Angela!

These are just three of the extraordinary assistance dogs that once called Circle Tail home. Check back all week as we continue to celebrate International Assistance Dog Week, and let some other assistance dogs, including those in training, strut their stuff!

Circle Tail wants to celebrate the lives of these special dogs, and give the families they left behind a place to honor the memories of the four-legged companions who so deeply touched their lives. The Memorial page contains numerous touching stories of these wonderful dogs, and anyone who has ever loved and lost a pet will surely be able to relate to the feelings expressed in the tributes.

Happy Beginnings: Mauser

Mauser's mom writes that he is a real comedian, and loves to make people laugh. He "tickles" necks with his beard, and loves the laughter he gets in response. He is also quite a "talker," and always tries to sweet talk his way out of mischief, something he gets into quite a bit. Mauser's family is thrilled with how much laughter Mauser has brought to their home.

In addition to his human family, Mauser has a canine sister named Fleagle. He adores Fleagle, and loves snuggling with her and giving her kisses every morning. He is a love bug!

As Mauser's mom writes, "We love him so much and can hardly imagine how we ever lived without him.... We thank you so much for bringing this wonderful dog into our lives."

Summer Gathering

Happy Beginnings: Roxie

Roxie's mom writes that Roxie is a "sweetheart," who can be quite demanding when it comes to being petted. She loves being petted so much, she will nudge her mom's arm to signal her to let the petting begin. She also loves her canine sibling Tilly, and the two of them run around so much together that they are hazardous to the grass on their lawn. It's clear from this picture though that Roxie and Tilly also love relaxing together. This is the life!

Roxie's mom sums the family's feelings up best. "I can't begin to thank you and Circle Tail enough for allowing us to bring Roxie into our lives."

I'm sure Roxie is very thankful for her family, too. Keep enjoying your new life, Roxie!

Mario the Hearing Dog

Mario was partnered with Gerria, a former firefighter and paramedic, in September, 2010, and now lives with her in Kentucky. Gerria reports that Mario has adjusted well to his new life, and is a blessing.

She writes, "Mario is my hearing partner and has become very special to me... Due to my past career as a firefighter and paramedic, I have significant hearing loss. The hearing loss has affected me in ways you cannot even imagine. I have 5 grandchildren and a school full of EMT, paramedic, and other medical related students who need my attention, sometimes very quickly. Mario is quick to tap me very softly on my leg to let me know someone is calling my name, which is very important in my business. Mario also retrieves items I drop because I cannot hear it when the item falls to the ground. This can mean losing my car keys, medical equipment, money, or important paperwork, just to mention a few items. Mario has quickly adjusted to Asbury College, our students at Emergency Medical Training Professionals LLC, grandchildren, and life on the run in Kentucky!"

Way to go, Mario!

Happy Beginnings: Ella

Ella's family writes that within a week of her homecoming, Ella was out of her crate and had the run of the house. She is best buddies with her sibling Yukon, and it looks like the two of them have the run of their yard as well. Ella and Yukon play and wrestle constantly, and Ella couldn't be happier.

Ella's owner writes "It has just been great we are so happy. She is a part of our family."

Happy Beginnings: Jackson

Jackson, known as Khanti during his time at Circle Tail, now lives in Kentucky with his new family. Jackson is in training to be a therapy dog, and he is getting wonderful practice by helping out at his owner's funeral home business. Jackson sits in when families come to the funeral home for services, and he has developed such a wonderful reputation as a canine grief counselor that his presence is now requested at most funerals. Jackson is a quiet source of comfort to the bereaved, and his gentle presence helps ease their grief. As Jackson's owner puts it, Jackson is "loved by all." He writes that Jackson "is a perfect angel, and I'm not sure what I would do without him."

Jackson is a professional, and he dresses the part. Keep up the great work, Jackson!

Happy Beginning: Ursula

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this week's Happy Beginning is putting that theory to the test. I don't know the background of Ursula, a labradoodle who was adopted into her forever home a few years ago, and I don't even know much about new life. But this picture says more than my words ever could.

I think it's safe to say Ursula has made some great friends and is living a happy life, don't you?

Former Circle Tail Inmate Handler Works to Help Troubled Youth

Victor Addis' life changed the day he started working with Marlys Staley and the Circle Tail dogs at the Ross Correctional Institution in Chillecothe, Ohio. Now, he is using what he learned from Circle Tail to change the lives of at-risk youths.

Victor's first Circle Tail dog was Lena, a pregnant beagle who no one else in the dog program wanted. Lena gave birth to 12 pups in Victor's cell and, as Lena had mastitis and couldn't produce milk herself, Victor spent a hot summer bottle-feeding all of her pups, often missing dinner so he could tend to the puppies. Victor says he wouldn't change the experience for anything, as it was the beginning of his new life.

He later moved to the London Correctional Institute, a lower security facility, and had the good fortune to be there just as Marlys was getting the London dog program started. He signed up to learn how to work with the service dogs in training, and went on to train so many service dogs that they became his specialty. Victor says he read all the dog training books he could get his hands on, and learned as much as he could from Marlys, taking notes whenever she would give training sessions at the prison. He still considers Marlys his mentor, and consults with her regularly.

When Victor was released from prison in 2003, he knew he wanted to continue working with dogs. Eventually, he formed Dogs Training Youth, an organization to help at-risk youth by exposing them to the joy and unconditional love of a dog.

The program started modestly, with Victor meeting with a handful of kids from his neighborhood who had taken an interest in his own dog, a beautiful Rottweiler named Cassie. Victor, Cassie, and the kids met weekly at Dorl Field in Norwood, Ohio, and Victor taught the kids how to work with Cassie using a clicker and other methods of positive reinforcement. Eventually, the kids started asking Victor if he could show them how to train their own dogs, and Dogs Training Youth was born.

The program, which only operates in the spring and summer due to weather and the lack of an indoor facility, pairs at-risk kids with local rescue dogs, and helps to teach the kids responsibility and respect for other living creatures through their work with the dogs. As Victor states, he sees things "start to click" for the kids as they work with the dogs, and they become excited and confident as they see what they and the dogs can accomplish together. As the kids gain more confidence and self-respect, they are less inclined to turn to the street looking for a sense of belonging.

Dogs Training Youth is getting ready to start its fourth season, and Victor is expecting as many as 13 kids to participate this year. Each one will have the opportunity to change their lives with the help of a dog, just as Victor changed his own life through the dogs of Circle Tail.

Tweet a Circle Tail Pet Tuesday

The wonderful people at Petfinder created TweetaPetTues on Twitter in order to help spread the word about rescue animals in need of homes. The idea is very simple, as all any rescue group needs to do is add the hashtag #tweetapettues to their tweets every Tuesday, and their animals can then be seen by anyone searching for this hashtag. It goes without saying that the more an animal is seen, the better chance he or she has of finding a forever home.

We have an adorable group of puppies who were born here at Circle Tail on December 8, 2010. Their mom, a rescue, is a German Shepherd Dog mix. Dad, who is apparently a love 'em and leave 'em type, is unknown. So these pups are a cute-as-a-button mix of who knows what, and they're all ready and waiting for their new homes.

Happy Beginnings

Circle Tail's Happy Beginnings is a celebration of adoption success stories, and a testament to the wonderful ways rescue dogs can enrich our lives.

Each week, we will shine the spotlight on one of these dogs, and share his or her personal success story. Our inaugural Happy Beginning is Lenny, a superstar who is sure to get our series off on the right paw.

Before he came to Circle Tail, Lenny spent his life tied to a tree. It was a rough start, and he had the rough, unkempt look to prove it.

It's clear from Lenny's expression that he was a timid and scared little guy, and who can blame him?

Once Lenny found himself in the safe and friendly world of Circle Tail, things started to improve. The wonderful Circle Tail groomers worked their magic, and brought out the handsome, playful boy hiding underneath Lenny's scruffy coat.

Happy to strut his stuff, Lenny was soon adopted, and found a home beyond his wildest dreams. He has two canine sisters, Maggie and Sadie, and he gets to go to doggy daycare with them and play to his heart's content. He is also a huge fan of playing Frisbee.

Lenny has come a long way since his lonely days spent tied to a tree. Now, he is living large and loving life, and he has the smile to prove it!

Way to go, Lenny!

How Your Year-End Gift Changes Lives

In 2009, Amy Hoh received the best present of her life - independence. For Amy, Service Dog Cortez has granted her the gift of independence, mobility, and unconditional love through his training at Circle Tail. Cortez may retrieve an object that is out of reach, open a door, or provide a nudge to Amy's leg so she will check on her diabetes.

For Cortez, Amy is able to give him a long-lasting partnership full of adventure, work, and most importantly - love.

In 2008, Gainer entered into Abigail's life. Trained to retrieve items and alert others when Abigail has a medical emergency, Gainer has an ability to detect issues that arise with Abigail's pacemaker. "It brings me to tears to know how grateful I am to have him in my life; he has changed it drastically" - Abigail

Roger Dees was partnered with his in-home assistance dog Esa in the summer of 2010. This life-long relationship has given both Roger and Esa a sense of independence and purpose. In-home assistance dogs are trained to assist people with disabilities within their homes. These dogs may retrieve objects, open and close doors, or tun light switches off and on. Roger and Esa are equal partners in their journey toward independence and unconditional love.

The Inmate/Canine Educational Training Program began in September 1998 to help provide trained dogs for adoption and assistance dogs to individuals with disabilities. Under regular instruction by Circle Tail, inmates care for and train the dogs and puppies that are in the program. "My best memory was when Circle Tail brought me a pregnant dog named Lena that I agreed to take and care for. Lena had 12 pups in my cell. It was the first time pups were born in that prison! It was a hot summer in the cell and I missed chow a lot, but I wouldn't change the experience for anything!" - Victor E. Addis, Jr.

That summer, Circle Tail saved more than just the lives of Lena and her puppies.
